The Zen of Social Media Marketing

When I sat down to enjoy Shama Kabani's new book, the Zen of Social Media Marketing, I was expecting to absorb a couple chapters a night during my quest to take my online marketing prowess to the next level.

I read the entire thing in one evening.

Not since Claude Hopkins' 1923 classic Scientific Advertising has a marketing book held my attention so intently. Shama, a lively and personable genius in her own right, didn't see any need to fluff her book up with generalities and useless anecdotes. Rather, every word, every case study, every personal story is crafted to bring the reader into a deeper understanding of how to lay an effective social media marketing foundation.

I like authors who respect my time and give me exactly what I need. Shama does both.

It's no surprise that digital marketing guru Chris Brogan chose to write the book's foreword. Brogan's philosophy of putting people over platforms aligns perfectly with Shama's style of nurturing very real, human relationships through online mediums. She sees the internet as an extension of (not a replacement for!) community and draws on common real world interactions like coffee houses and office-networking events to illustrate her point.

Chapter one is all about the philosophy of online marketing. "If you aim at nothing, you'll hit it every time" is what my mother always says. Shama writes: "online marketing is the art and science of...leveraging the internet to get your message across so that you can move people to action." The message is clear: you don't do social media marketing because your competitors do; you do it because it has the ability to "convert strangers into consumers and consumers into customers."

"Strategy should always come before tactics."

Shama evidently prefers her readers to know where they are going and why they are on the journey before she expends any energy on telling them how to operate the car.

The rest of the book is packed with tactics on how to relate to your audience using Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and web video. I pride myself on being a decent online marketer, and even I found myself taking notes on when to engage people through Facebook Groups and when to encourage the following of a Facebook Page. Should I care how many Twitter followers I have? Shama says I should, but not in the ego-stroking way I may be inclined to.

The only disappointment I faced was that my tech-savvy, Star Trek watching side wasn't fed. Not because the material wasn't solid, but because...

Shama speaks the language of small business.

You may not be a marketer; you may sew quilts or manufacture plantation shutters. Shama understands, and she writes with you in mind. Easy to remember acronyms and formulas, like Visability + Credibility = Success, and succinct, numbered checklists will help you implement her recommendations immediately.

I should quit talking before I begin to ramble. The bottom line is: social media marketing is something you, a small business owner, can participate in quite successfully. Shama Kabani's book, The Zen of Social Media Marketing, will show you how.

In every business, the marketing strategy being used is vital. This is what determines how successful an individual will be able to sell of his products and services to other people. For this reason, it is vital for a business owner to make use of aggressive marketing techniques in order to attract the right people. This is where Guerilla Marketing ideas for real estate sales are highly appreciated.

Since every marketer needs to have leads that translate to a successful business, the importance of using a marketing strategy should never be neglected. For every new business owner, generating fresh leads is difficult. This is why they need to be aggressive and look for people who might be more than willing to join them in their business. Given the fact that it's already difficult to find leads, it is even more challenging to keep consistent leads. For this, some online tactics are highly needed.

4 Ways to Generate Consistent Leads Online

Tip #1: Have Your Own Website

Having your own website has certainly paid off for many business owners. This is because it has allowed their audience to see what the business is truly about. In addition, it allows them to gain trust in the company because they have been able to get ideas about the establishment.

Tip #2: Write Articles

There are now several article submission sites where you can publish your articles to. This will allow individuals to see different information that you have provided about your business. When they are looking for a particular product, they will get to find your articles and will visit your website. This is a great way they can get in touch with you.

Tip #3: Paid Advertising

Online advertising is done through banner ads and by sending out newsletters. By using this method, you can pull in the right people who will want to buy your products and services. Since they have already been targeted by the niche you used to advertise in, you can be sure that your efforts are not turned to waste because they generate the right people for your products and services.

Tip #4: Social Networking Sites

Nowadays, almost everyone is on Facebook and Twitter. If you decide to join these networking sites, you will be able to connect to thousands of people throughout the world. This lets you attract a wider scope because these people already know what your business is about. As a result, they just have to follow news that you post on these networking sites.

Xtab Pages Review

Build Facebook Pages Like A Fortune 500 Company!

With the arrival of iFrames and the HTML5 framework, the door to new opportunities and possibilities of creating a Facebook Page for the express purpose of Internet Marketing is blown wide open. It is now possible to create an entire website on a Facebook Page. Complete web sites with multiple pages, videos, photo galleries, opt-ins, sales pages, landing pages and links. If an Internet Marketer wishes to run an affiliate marketing campaign, viral marketing campaign, or any other kind of campaign, he or she can now harness the potential of 750 million users on Facebook!

It’s no surprise, then, that there are many apps now out on the market that are geared towards helping Internet Marketers gain a foothold on Facebook and to leapfrog over their competitors. While the question of which app provider is the best is certainly up for debate, few would leave the X-Tab team out of the discussion. And now, they have launched their latest addition to the X-Tab family, XTAB PAGES.

Phil Benham and Daniel Tan had the courtesy to take me through a short walkthrough of their latest app. I was quite impressed by how quickly a Facebook Page with a corporate profile theme was set up. With the use of custom templates and a point-and-click interface, this was all accomplished under two minutes. Of course the text, videos and images are all prepared beforehand, but it goes to show just how easy it is to set up a Page with the right materials. I later learned that one of the challenges facing Internet Marketers on Facebook is the ability to set up Pages quickly and efficiently to meet different demands and needs, and XTAB PAGES accomplishes this role quite well.

The X-Tab has been promoting XTAB PAGES (formerly known as ElementsPlus) with the tagline of “Build Pages Like a Fortune 500 Company”. Well, XTAB PAGES certainly has the cred to back it up. The ability to customize a Page anyway I want is absolutely huge. Custom HTML, custom CSS and even custom Javascript are all direct features of this app. Users can also insert videos and images anywhere on the Page. The videos can be embedded from popular video sharing sites like YouTube and DailyMotion, or directly coded. What’s more, the all-important Like-gating feature is incorporated as well.

However, what really impresses me most with XTAB PAGES is its ability to instantly implement and customize the staple Facebook functions such as Like, Share, Comments and Invite, in any way I wanted. I could essentially modify and customize them however I like.

I tinkered around with the app to create a Page with Like-gating that was aimed at encouraging viral marketing. By using the custom templates, and with some guidance from Phil and Daniel, the Page was set up from scratch in a few short minutes. It was quite bare, but it had the infrastructure in place and is ready for launch. All I needed to do was to include my own videos and images later to make it complete. Phil also shared a nugget of wisdom with me, “When generating traffic to your Page, your absolute goal is to get as many Likes as possible”. Safe to say, with the in-built Like-gating feature and high customization afforded to me by ElementsPlus, such as modifying the Like and Share buttons to my heart’s content, I was able to create a highly compelling Facebook Page.

All in all, I highly recommend XTAB PAGES to any serious Internet Marketer who wants to get a leg up on the competition in their Facebook Marketing niche. You can go here and check out more details about the awesome app.

To your Facebook Marketing success!

Incorporate Facebook Into Travel Marketing Plan

Mark Zuckerberg, founder and CEO of Facebook

In addition to your marketing Web site, your CVB or tourism bureau has the opportunity to be seen by more than 250 million people all over the world at any given time. This idea of increasing your Web traffic may seem complicated and time-consuming, but it is much easier than you may think.

According to Facebook's statistics, more than 120 million users log in each day, contributing to more than 5 billion minutes being spent each day worldwide on the site. Despite what you may think about Facebook being targeted for teens and young adults, the current fastest growing demographic is people ages 35 and older. Combine that with the Domestic Travel Market Report statistics that the average age of a domestic traveller is 46 (and that 75% of Americans travel for leisure) and you don't need another reason to join Facebook.

Other than the statistics, Facebook brings a lot to the table:

  • A plethora of media devices at your fingertips. Uploading video, pictures, slideshows and easy posting makes sharing multimedia easy.
  • The ability to generate discussions easily. Direct messaging capabilities, wall postings, group networking and creating fan pages give your CVB or tourism bureau a broad range of tourism and destination marketing tools at your fingertips.
  • High SEO capabilities. Facebook can be placed high on Google results, especially if you customize your Facebook address.
  • High reachability. You have the ability to not only keep up with your clients, but give potential clients a taste of what they are missing. You have the ability to search for people who are interested in travelling, as well as the individual assets your destination has to offer, and you reach out to them directly.
  • Networking. Become a fan of similar pages to gather a bigger following. In turn, they have the ability to link back to your site.

All of these capabilities for tourism advertising and destination branding are not just limited to your company's Web site. These services are available in addition to what you may already have in terms of Internet marketing.

WordPress Blogging Tool for Small Business

WordPress
WordPress (Photo credit: Adriano Gasparri)

Since leaving the corporate world, I have had many questions about what exactly I do. Questions arise every day, what is Word Press? What is Corporate Flunkie? What do you do as a blogger? What is affliliate marketing? What exactly do you do now? Well I am going to start with the first question and do my best to answer.

WordPress is a FREE web software that anyone can use to create and update a blog or even a web-site. You install the program on a web-server (or host account, such as Host Gator, which is what I use). Then with the user interface you can create pages, posts, write articles, upload images. Everything is managed from the administration panel that you have a user id and password too.

WordPress Functionality:
  • Create pages (ex: About Me, Contact Me, Shop, Latest Update)
  • Allows you to write your articles in chronological order, newest are always listed first.
  • Utilizing the Themes tool you can give your site personality with a design.
  • Visitors can leave comments to your articles or posts.
  • As the administrator you decide who/what comments you will allow.
  • You can create menus to make your site easier for visitors.
  • There are built in FREE Plugins that you can download which add extra functions to your site.
WordPress has been mistaken many times as a program utilized ONLY for blogging. This is not true. This misconception is because that is how it originated. However, today its users span a broad range from TechCrunch, to TED, CNN, and National Football League, NBC Sports to name a few. Companies from all over the globe are utilizing WordPress to update their websites. Over 350 million people view more than 2.5 billion pages each month. In addition, it hosts blogs written in over 120 languages. Below is a breakdown of the top 10 languages taken right from WordPress website.
  1. English 66%
  2. Spanish 8.7%
  3. Portuguese 6.5%
  4. Indonesian 3.5%
  5. Italian 2%
  6. German 1.8%
  7. French 1.4%
  8. Russian 1.1%
  9. Vietnamese 1.1%
  10. Swedish 1.0%
According to WordPress, as of 2011 over 100,000 new WordPresses are created everyday around the world. In addition, they show no signs of this slowing down. Publishers are using it to create all kinds of sites beyond blogs - news sites, company sites, magazines, social networks, sports sites, and more. Their showcase contains many interesting examples.

Top 5 reasons to use WordPress:
  • SEO-they offer many SEO benefits FREE of charge.
  • Content-you easily create and edit pages using a simple text editor, NO HTML to learn.
  • Extensions-FREE design themes, contact forms and cool features without hiring a web designer.
  • Support-Thousands of web developers found on Google to assist you with any issues.
  • One-Click Installation-many web hosting providers utilize the quick install system including HostGator and others.
Many have made comparisons of Facebook to WordPress and even going as far to state that it may be on its way to being the next Facebook. I'm not so sure that I agree with that and here's why. WordPress has an appeal to those who want to create a strong presence online. But not everyone has the desire to do this.

Blogging offers a way for individuals to have their "own place" online, if you will. Many of those using Facebook do so for social networking and promoting their own sites. In addition, Facebook has made their software so user friendly that the average person with very little knowledge of computers can utilize it. With WordPress it takes a certain level of skill to navigate the software as well as focus, to post blogs frequently.

Overall, WordPress is a user friendly blogging/website software to use. Not to mention a powerful tool for online business. As with any software it has some technical tasks that could be worked through but it's totally FREE and with that price, one can't find too much to complain about!

Likeable Social Media: Branding Facebook

English: Infographic on how Social Media are b...
English: Infographic on how Social Media are being used, and how everything is changed by them. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

I am a 21-year-old marketing major graduating college in less than six months who helped my college design curriculum for an e-commerce course featuring social media.

When approaching books about social media, I am hesitant to spend my hard-earned money on a book that tells you what you already know about Facebook and Twitter. Likeable Social Media was the first book of five I purchased in the business and social media field.

Mr. Kerpen is a talented writer and complements his discussions about what it means to be a "likeable" brand with positive and negative anecdotes. It's a fairly quick read with frequent content headers, screenshots from Facebook and easily-digestible highlights to share with coworkers (such as the "10 Reasons Why Consumers Like Fan Pages on Facebook).

There are other books and resources out there that give more concrete how-to's and a step-by-step guide to undertaking social media. If you are looking for content focused around these areas, seek out whitepapers and ebooks from social media monitoring companies who will gladly hand you the information for free in return for your contact info.

Hands down, the best asset of this book is its appeal to different audiences. While you could place this book in the hands of a CEO to show them the power of social media, I as a 21-year-old digital native confident in my knowledge of social media was able to walk away with roughly 10 pages of notes and suggestions.

Likeable Social Media left me not only encouraged but empowered to undertake the creation of a social media strategy for a company.

Where this book falls short is a lack of diversity. Discussions surrounding Facebook dominate this book--and rightfully so given its place as the top social network. I would have liked to see more discussions on the power of Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest and Google+ in the same scope Facebook is discussed. I do understand though that this book was published in 2011 and things have drastically changed even since then.

However, I still rate this as a five-star book. What's incredible to me is how connected and committed Mr. Kerpen is to this book and building an engaging community. He practices what he preaches. Recently, I tweeted a friend with a suggestion to read this book. Within five minutes, I had a personal tweet sent to me from Mr. Kerpen thanking me for recommending his book.

Mr. Kerpen clearly gives those working in social media a blueprint on how to be more "likeable" and lives it out in his own social, online life.
